At first it may not seem like it, but this difference is crucial to comfort levels in any space, whether residential, or corporate. The so-called color temperature defines the appearance of the light emitted by an artificial light source, and is expressed in the Kelvin unit (K).

The warm white light, contrary to what you might think, does not mean that the lighting will heat up your environment – in fact, no LED lighting product does that. In fact, this is the name given to the light emitted between 2,700K to 3,500K, which reproduces a yellowish tone, similar to the rays of the sun at sunset.

Cold white light is between 5,500K and 6,500K, and is more like the sun’s rays in the strongest hours of daylight, such as noon, for example. The result is a more pure illumination, almost reaching the blue nuances.

LED technology lamps are currently the only ones that can have this characteristic determined relatively easily during their manufacture. This is because they do not rely on gases or other substances that determine the color appearance of the light emitted. The light emitting diodes, which are electronic, receive devices as if they were filters, which direct to the desired hue.


Forget for a moment the decoration: lighting is one of the factors of greater influence by the sensations perceived in the environment of rest and relaxation or work or business, in which we remain for long periods.

Precisely because of this greater permanence in artificially illuminated environments, our organism suffers psychological and physiological impacts that can be both pleasurable – when the lighting design is well elaborated – and harmful – when the light is above or below the ideal level.

Thus, it is necessary to know exactly where and how to install hot or cold white in the correct way, in order to avoid damages to health and yield in the tasks performed.


The cold or warm white lighting has different applications, which are determined according to the functions to be performed in each projected space.


For environments that require more attention, such as kitchens, service areas, offices and  home offices, the use of cold white light is recommended. After all, it is best suited for space users to stay alert during the performance of their tasks.

In the case of kitchens and service areas, the importance of cold white light is in the attention to the handling of sharp objects, very hot, with some level of acidity or flammable. Already in the study and work places, it is essential to maintain concentration and productivity.

In places that require a lot of light, the project must rely on the joint operation of general lighting with the task lighting, and even with natural light during the day. It all depends on the building’s architecture and the needs of the users.


Socialization spaces, such as living rooms and  balconies, do not require a great intensity of lighting. The most suitable is to have indirect light and warm white, which is visually more comfortable and allows the body to feel relaxed.

In these cases, the lighting design can be composed of features in the ceiling, spots installed in the ceiling peripheries, lamps, among others – that is, installations and luminaires that soften and decentralize light into the environment.


In general, intimate spaces, such as double rooms, children’s rooms and closets, follow the same rules of lighting of socializing environments. It is also interesting to bet on  LED strips  and other types of beacons, which are especially beautiful when integrated into the joinery and lining work.

However, directed illumination is welcome in front of the cabinets so that, even with the lower light level of the rest of the environment, users can handle and look for objects without visual fatigue.


In integrated environments, there may be confusion on which type of ideal color temperature to use. However, it is possible to combine the two types or to choose one of them and to vary in the forms of light – direct or indirect light, slopes, spots, rails or other solutions that provide the luminous level necessary for the performance of each function in the room.
